Madcow 5x5

Madcow 5x5 is an intermediate strength program designed to follow a beginner 5x5 program like StrongLifts. To adapt to the heavier weights and longer recovery required in an intermediate program, each lift ramps up to a top set of 5 and the week is structured with a volume, lighter, and intensity day.

Madcow is not meant to be run indefinitely and trainees should stall after about 8 to 12 weeks. At that point, a rest or deload week should be taken and training maxes should be adjusted for the next block of training.

The program has some recommended assistance exercises but they are not necessary and a bit outdated. If you're looking to add assistance exercises, additional core work is usually added on the volume and light days and arms are added on intensity day.
